Jakarta

Jakarta as a metropolis is the center for government and trade. Jakarta occupies an area of 670 square kilometers with population over 12 million. Many visitors come to Jakarta for different purposes, business and also leisure. Jakarta as one of Indonesia's tourist destinations has all the facilities to cater tourist needs, ranging from cheap motels to luxurious chain hotels, plazas, bars, .
Jakarta's indigenous people or also known as Orang Betawi emerged from the melting pot of races, ethnic groups and cultures of Indonesia in the 19th century. The majority of ethnic groups in Jakarta today are Orang Betawi, Sundanese and Javanese. Jakarta is the melting pot for many people in Indonesia. Different ethnic groups and races are melting together in Jakarta. The Orang Betawi still holding their customs and tradition from time to time. Their traditions can be seen at the wedding ceremony, Keroncong Tugu, Tari Topeng (mask dance) and Tanjidor. All of them are one of the attractions that Jakarta has to offer.

Jakarta has a tropical climate. Its daily temperature is 28°C during the day and a somewhat cooler 25°C at night. The average humidity is 81%. The wet season is from October to April, with the heaviest rains between December and January, and the dry season is from May to September.
Jakarta as the center of government and trade is equipped by various means of transportation to get to and going from Jakarta. Railway stations are available at Jakarta Kota Station, Gambir and Jatinegara that serve route to major destinations throughout Java. While travelling by bus, Jakarta has some Intercity Bus Stations that offer various services from economy class to executive class to destinations in Java, Bali and Sumatera. The Pulogadung Bus Station, for Eastern destinations, Kampung Rambutan Bus Station for Southern destinations. City buses are very busy and crowded, unless you take air conditioned bus, if possible.For other means of transportation, Pelni Shipping Company is ready to take you to major ports through the archipelago. From Jakarta, Tanjung Priok harbour is the starting point of your journey by sea transport. If you want to travel by air, Soekarno Hatta International airport serves various routes to major destinations in Indonesia. As for the airline, some local airlines such Garuda, Merpati, Bouraq and Mandala operate scheduled flights around the country. If you want to go to the center of city by yourself, you can choose to take taxi or DAMRI Bus (to selected bus station in Jakarta)which operates every 30 to 60 minutes. Soekarno-Hatta International Airport is located 13 miles (20 km) northwest of central Jakarta. Ask the information desk in the arrivals area which bus route you should take to get to your destination.
1. Also known as Monas (Monumen Nasional). Located at the center of Taman Medan Merdeka (Medan Merdeka Square), Monas is the landmark of Jakarta and also the center where people usually gather for different purposes, such as sports, relaxing or recreation. This monument, symbolizing the nation's independence. At the top of Monas there is a replica of flame coated with 35 kg of gold. An elevator rides to the top of the monuments and from its viewing platform visitors can get a bird's eye view of Jakarta. The basement houses a museum depicting the nation's history.
2. Sunda Kelapa Harbour is known for its history. The harbour was built during the Dutch Colonialism back in 14th Century. Sunda Kelapa Harbour is the oldest harbour in Indonesia. Today the harbor is still functioning as home to the largest active sailing fleet in the world, classic "Pinisi" schooners, that carry agricultural and industrial products from Java to other islands and back. Fishing boats anchor here bringing their daily catch for auction at the nearby fish market, Pasar Ikan, about four in the morning.
3. Wayang is a traditional puppet in Indonesia and it has different types depends on the area of origin.The Wayang Museum collects all types of puppet from all over Indonesia and abroad.
4. Seribu Island comprises of at least 140 small islands off Jakarta Bay. It has the fantastic scenery along with underwater world which will make your vacation unforgettable.
5. If you want to explore Indonesian culture without having to travel throughout Indonesia, then you have to visit Taman Mini Indonesia Indah, located at Pondok Gede Area, East of Jakarta. At Taman Mini you will find traditional houses from 26 provinces in Indonesia along with their traditions, history, way of living etc.
6. This museum is located at Jl. Medan Merdeka Barat. A bronze elephant stands in front and it's the reason why the museum is popularity called Museum Gajah (Elephant Museum).It houses a unique collection of Indonesia cultural relics of special interest are its ethnographic, historical, pre-historic and archeological sections. Its collection of Chinese and Southeast Asian Ceramic is among the most complete in the region, and its Hindu Javanese art collection is said to rival that of Leyden, Holland.
7. Jakarta History Museum or also known as Fatahillah Museum is one of the historic buildings in Jakarta. The building was the center of colonial administration in the 18th century, during the Dutch colonialization. Located in Old Jakarta Kota area, the museum displays various kinds of furniture, Batavia's Governor General portrait, porcelains etc. This museum is a must visit place for heritage lovers or for nostalgic purposes.
